Joel Shapiro (American, 1941)

Conjunction, 1999, bronze, 40 x 27 x 16 feet

“I wanted Conjunction to be enthusiastic and optimistic, and about possibility”

Conjunction was commissioned by FAPE in 1998, and was installed at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa by the artist the following year. The work was FAPE’s first site-specific project.

Shapiro is one of the United States’ best-known sculptors. His work, while based on the human figure, stands at the intersection of abstract and figurative art. Shapiro’s sculptures and drawings have been seen in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and are in the collections of major museums worldwide. The artist was born in New York City and received his B.A. and M.A. from New York University. The recipient of many awards and honors, he continues to live and work in New York City.

Gift of the artist with additional funding provided by Arne Glimcher; Barrick Gold Corporation, Toronto; The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation; Power Corporation of Canada, Montreal; TrizecHahn Corporation, Toronto; an anonymous donor and members of FAPE’s Millennium Committee
